Essential Oils have become a huge part of my families daily routine. When I started using them all I had was melaleuca (tea tree oil) and peppermint oil. I had no idea what to do with it for the first 6 months that I had them. They just sat in my pantry with the jar of pickles that had been forgotten until my husband started to get a nasty sore throat/cough/the yuck.
He was going to go to Walgreens and grab some decongestant, but last minute decided to grab the melaleuca and peppermint, heated up a warm cup of water, and put 2 drops of melaleuca and 3 drops of peppermint into the cup. He then proceeded to gargle and spit the whole glass. The effects were AMAZING! He instantly had relief. This was great because whenever he had picked up this bug before, it had lasted at least 2 weeks if not three. I had to learn more.
So I called up his cousin Tommi who had been learning about oils for a few years at the time, she had just joined an oil company and was raving about their products. Of course, I needed to hear and learn more about these amazing products.
Over the next year and a half I got a few oils, used the peppermint once in a while, but I still had no idea what to do with them, and there didn’t seem to be any education on them that I had found where I lived. (Sort of a rural area…) Thankfully, after a little more searching Tommi once again, found a company that was not only selling the oils, but they were educating their employees as well as the people who only bought the products. That’s when I starting using doTERRA essential oils.
I went to an essential 101 class that one of their product consultants was teaching. She went over: what essential oils are, ways that you can use the oils, and how doTERRA’s oils are different than other oils in the market.
How my family uses essential oils – DAILY
My daily use of essential oils consists of lemon oil in my drinking water. A blend called Balance on my feet or right behind my ears.
Whenever my 6 month old, Colton, starts having issues with his teething, I put White Fir underneath his jaw and a small amount of coconut oil with clove oil in it directly on his gums. This gives him instant relief every time!
At bath time I will use 1/2 C. Baking Soda, 1/4 C. Epsom Salt, and 1-2 drops of Serenity, or Lavender essential oil. This gives them a calming, relaxation that gets them ready for bed. This plays not only into the topical application for them, but also the smell lets them know that it is time to wind down, and they associate this smell with sleep, making it easier for them to go down… most of the time.
That’s our daily routine. Around the house I have a spray bottle with OnGuard in it to sanitize shopping carts, my toddlers hands, and to put on the toys after we have played with them for the day. I also have my diffuser going with a blend for the day. Recently I have been using lemon, lime, and peppermint. this blend, for me has been great for my mood, as well as making the house smell fresh and awake!
Most recent experience
Our most recent experience with using the essential oils that isn’t in our daily routine has been with a bout of children’s warts called Molluscum Contagiosum. I had never heard of this wart until my 2 year old, Kal, started to get some on his torso, so when we went to his 2 1/2 year check up I learned all about this, no too contagious, wart that was growing. I was told that it would last up to a year, and in my head all I was thinking, “that’s what you think doc”. Don’t get me wrong I like our kids’ doctor, but thankfully, I know that these oils attack viruses and would take care of this pesky wart in no time!
Sure enough I brought him home and got out the Melaleuca, OnGuard, and Oregano, put two drops of each into about 5 tbsp of coconut oil and started oiling the warts 3x a day. Those warts lasted about 2 weeks!
What are essential oils?
An essential oil is a liquid that is generally distilled (most frequently by steam or water) from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant. Essential oils, contrary to the use of the word “oil” are not really oily-feeling at all. Most essential oils are clear, but some oils such as patchouli, orange and lemongrass are amber or yellow in color.
Ways to use essential oils:
You can use essential oils 3 ways:
- Topically: This means putting oils on the skin. You do need to be careful in what oils you put on your skin neat. Neat is without a carrier oil such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, etc. An example of a hot oil is cinnamon, where an oil that you can put on your skin neat would be lavender. Although you can put some oils on your skin neat, the best way is to use a carrier oil, not only because of the safety, if you don’t know what oils are hot, but also because by using a carrier oil, you keep the essential oil encased in the carrier oil so that your body can get the full benefit of the whole drop of oil instead of some of it evaporating from your skin.
- Aromatically: Using a diffuser, or putting the oils in hot water and inhaling the steam affects the limbic system which can affect emotions, mood, and memory. The University of Minnesota put it best in their section of inhaling essential oils, ” Essential oils can be inhaled using a variety of techniques and devices.
- Diffuser: Essential oils are placed in this device, sometimes with water (be sure to read the directions), and sometimes with heat so they evaporate. Some diffusers have a timer for convenience. Essential oils should never be directly burned as the chemical structure is dramatically changed with incineration (Buckle, 2003).
- Dry Evaporation: Several drops of essential oil are placed on a cotton ball or tissue and allowed to evaporate into the air. If you want an intense dose, sniff the cotton ball. If a milder, more constant exposure is desired, simply keep the cotton ball in your immediate vicinity (for example, leave it sitting on your desk next to your computer).
- Steam: Drops of essential oil are added to a bowl of steaming water, which quickly vaporizes the oil. Place a towel over your head and over the bowl of water with essential oil drop(s) and breathe deeply. This method is very direct and potent—the use of more than 1-2 drops may be overwhelming. It is important keep the eyes closed when using this method. The use of eucalyptus essential oil in this way can feel helpful with upper respiratory and sinus infections Note: This is not recommended for children younger than 7 years old. Children older than 7 who use this method of aromatherapy can use swimming goggles to protect their eyes.
- Spray: Drops of essential oils are placed in a water-based solution, shaken, and sprayed into the air in order to deodorize a room or set a mood. An example might be spraying an aqueous solution of pine or citrus oils to enhance holiday feelings or a solution of peppermint oil to stimulate alertness. It is important to shake the bottle before spraying in order to spray the solution and not just water.”
3. Internally: This method is unique to a few essential oil companies. doTERRA being one of them. Personally my family has used this method whenever we have a sickness pop up to my everyday use of lemon essential oil in my drinking water. Getting essential oils directly into your system is an amazing way to use the oils, and the benefits are equally as great.
